In 1963, Porsche unveiled the 911 at Frankfurt. For 34 years, it barely changed — air-cooled, hand-built, untouchable.

Then in 1997, at the same show, Weissach broke the rules. A new engine. A new body. Water instead of air. 3.4 litres. They called it the 996, and purists said Porsche had lost its soul.

They were wrong. The 996 saved the company, gave birth to the GT3 and the Mezger-engined legends, and made every modern 911 possible.
